Rosso Piceno

The wine Rosso Piceno is cultivated in a very wide area, the largest in Marches, on many hills in the country, excluded the DOC areas of Rosso Conero and Lacrima di Morro d’Alba.
The Latin poet Polibio mentions it when writing about Hannibal’ feats: he used to give his horses the strength by rubbing them with an aged Rosso Piceno wine.

Pliny the Elder too, writes on this wine and vines in Picenum, even if he gives a wrong position, that is, beyond the Alps. The wine Picenum takes its name from the civilization of Picenum people, living in the lands of Marches before the Roman domination, in the period of Imperial Rome.

Rosso Piceno loves high hills and is cultivated up to the slopes of Sibylline Mountains, at a maximum height of 700 m. a.s.l.. When called “Superiore”, it means a “cru”, produced in a very limited area of Ascoli district, aged in oak barrels for one year. This vine too does not tolerate humid lands and like a good sunny exposure.

The features that make it a unique wine are its ruby colour, moderately strong, tending to be brighter when aging; its pleasant vinous and slightly ethereal bouquet; its dry, savoury and harmonious taste.
